A sense of place

Agde, the black pearl

Founded by the Greeks, Agde owes its nickname to the dark stone of its volcano.

  1. The basalt old town

The old town is built of basalt, the stone of the old volcano. Its fortified cathedral of Saint-Étienne watches over the quays of the River Hérault. At the edge of the old town, the Canal du Midi passes through its round lock.

  2. Mont Saint-Loup and the coast

At the foot of Mont Saint-Loup, an extinct volcano, the coast unfolds its marinas and coves, and the black-sand beach of La Grande Conque. Out at sea stands Fort de Brescou.

  3. Le Grau d’Agde

At the mouth of the Hérault, Le Grau d’Agde has kept the feel of a fishing village, facing the pines of La Tamarissière.
